Summer Festival Slouchy Hat

Hello Cream of the Crop Crochet readers! I hope your summers are busy and full of sunshine and fun. My name is Bethany and I blog at Whistle and Ivy. I am one of the designers for Ashley's 12 months of Slouchy Hats. My contribution is this crochet Summer Festival Slouchy Hat.

Summer Festival Slouchy Hat

What you need:
H hook (5 mm)
2 Colors of Medium Weight yarn ( I suggest a cotton blend)

Abbreviations – American Terms
Ch – Chain
Sc – Single Crochet
Dc – Double Crochet
Sk – Skip
Sp – Space
St – Stitch

Gauge: 7 dcs = 2″

Note: To avoid lots of tails, you can “bring up” the yarn with each color change. Keep both colors attached to the hat and switch between them when you are switching colors, instead of cutting and rejoining.

Begin with a magic ring
1. Sc 10 in the ring. Join with sl st. (10 sts)
2. Ch 2. 2 dc in each st around. Join with sl st. (20 sts)
Join with 2nd color.
3. Ch 2. Dc in same st. Ch 1. *Dc, ch 1* work 19 times. Join with sl st. (40 sts)
Join 1st color.
4. Ch 2. *2 dc in next ch sp* repeat all around. Join with sl st. (40 sts)
Join with 2nd color.
5. Ch 2. 2 dc in same st. Ch 1. sk next st.  *2 dc in next st, ch 1. Sk next st.* repeat around the hat. Join with sl st.  (60 sts)
Join 1st color.
6. Ch 2. *2 dc in between 2 dc from previous round. dc in ch sp. 2 dc in between 2 dc from previous round. dc in ch 1 sp. 2 dc in next 2 sps (between 2 dc from previous round and ch 1 sp)* work 5 times. 2 dc in between 2 dc. dc in ch 1 sp. 2 dc in next 8 sps (including between 2 dc from previous round and ch-1 sp). Join with sl st. (69 sts)
Join with 2nd color.
7. ch 2. dc in same st. dc in next st. ch 1. sk next st. *Dc 2, ch 1. sk next st* work 22 times. Join with sl st. (69 sts)
Join 1st color.
8. Ch 2. 3 dc in same st. Sk next dc and ch. *3 dc in next st. Sk next dc and ch.* work 22 times. Join with sl st. (69 sts)
Repeat rows 7 and 8 respectively until you reach 17 total rows.
18. Ch 2. (*3 dc in same st. Sk next dc and ch.* work 3 times. 2 dc in next st. Sk next dc and ch.  ) repeat the entire instructions inside parentheses 5 times. *3 dc in next st. Sk next dc and ch* work 3 times. Join with first st. (64 st.
This step can be aa tad confusing. If it helps, you are working the shells like in step 8, but you are working a 2-dc shell after every 3 shells). This decreases the row count by 5 sts.
19.- 20. Ch 1. Sc in same st. Sc 63. Join with sl st. (64 sts)

I was doing fine until Row 6. Can’t figure out Row 6 and 7. It just doesn’t look right. I love the hat. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello! I am currently trying to make this hat for my boyfriend, but in row 6 I cannot seem to get 69 stitches! This is the second time I have tried this pattern and I cannot get it right.
