Yarn Weight and Crochet Hook Size Chart

When I first started crocheting I had no clue what hook to use with what yarn size. All I wanted was for someone to tell me what to use to get started, but nobody would. That's why I created this chart. I hope y'all can have a bit of your mind eased with this chart to help y'all get started. Happy crocheting!

To the user named Sheila Bancroft, usually I would use size 70, 80 or 100 crochet or tatting thread (such as the kind you can purchase on the Handy Hands website; you can also buy antique crochet/tatting thread on sites like eBay in bulk) for a hook size 0.6 mm (I think that’s around a size 14 steel crochet hook). As far as I know, they don’t make hooks smaller than that. In order to use thread that thin, many people struggle with the correct tension, so it will take some practice for a person who is unfamiliar with that size thread to get used to it.

I would recommend those people who want to use crochet hooks in sizes appropriate for lace making (such as doilies, table coverings or handkerchiefs), visit the website called Aabhar Creations and search for their crochet thread/steel hook guide. There are other sites with similar guides but that one is my personal favorite.

If a pattern calls for yarn weight 5 chunky + crochet hook 3.5mm (E), by changing the yarn weight to 4 worsted what size crochet hook would I use? I figured it’ll be a size 4mm (D). Thanks
