There are 3 things I love about this pattern: it's so easy to do, you can design it anyway you like, and it serves its purpose of shielding your newborn away from the chills. Try it with our free pattern below or get the ad-free printable PDF pattern here.
This simple snowflake hat sized for newborns up to bigger kids is super quick and easy to make.
Adding a little stitched snowflake embellishment to the side amps up the cuteness for winter wear – or for babies born in the winter. You could embellish the hat with anything you like, add a stitched bow, stitch on buttons, the sky is the limit.
You can of course also stitch the hat in any color you like, and since it takes as little as 50 yards for the newborn hat, this is a great stash buster to make in lots of different sizes as a charity project or to gift to all the littles in your life.
This is a simple crochet hat, but fun to put together and now that I think about it, it would look even cuter with the Mini Top Hat Crochet Pattern. You could also try this with the Plain Jane Bow!
Hats can be tricky if you are having a hard time mastering the magic ring. My Crochet (and Knit) Essential Skills course can help you master 72 skills essential to crocheting. Anything you can think of that you need more practice with you can find in these video classes.

Snowflake
With white, and using the photo as a guide, embroider a snowflake onto the hat as follows: Start inside the hat. Bring the yarn up to the outside of the hat at the center point of the snowflake. Bring the yarn down inside the hat again about 2-3 inches away, making a 2-3″ stitch. Make a small diagonal stitch, about ¼ to ½ inch, on either side of the end of the larger stitch you just made. These smaller stitches should form a “V” shape at the end of the larger stitch. Bring the needle back up at the center point again and repeat this process for the remaining 5 points of the snowflake, spacing them evenly apart.
Fasten off; weave in all ends.
