Preemie Newborn Valentine’s Owl Hat Crochet Pattern

What a cute owl hat? Want to make the eyes pop with color? Just use red or orange yarn to attach the buttons instead of pink!

Sizes Included

1-3 lb: 8.5-9″ circumference, 3.5-4″ length

3-5 lb: 11-11.5″ circumference, 4-5″ length

6-8 lb: 12-12.5″ circumference, 5-6″ length

9-11 lb (Newborn): 13-14″ circumference, 6-6.5″ length

Materials

Extra soft worsted weight yarn

  • We recommend Lion Brand, Vanna's Choice.
  1. Red
  2. Light Pink
  3. Off White
  4. Orange
  • 1-3 lb: ~ 17 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 3-5 lb: ~34 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 6-8 lb: ~43 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 9-11 lb (Newborn): ~51 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons

G-6 (4.00mm) crochet hook

2 wooden heart buttons

Fabric scissors

Yarn needle, to weave ends

Gauge

3 dc stitches x 2 rows is 1″

*Change the hook size to obtain the gauge.

Notes

  • Start in the same stitch as chain.
  • In the amount of stitches you should have at the end of the row, (ex. 11 sts). The count does include the chain.

1-3 lb Preemie Hat

Starting with red yarn.

ch 3

Row 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Row 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Row 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* repeat * to * around dc in next st, join in top of first dc (30 sts)

Cut yarn and change to light pink yarn.

Rows 4-6: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (30 sts)

Row 7: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, fpdc in next st, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (30 sts)

3-5 lb Preemie Hat

Starting with red yarn.

ch 3

Row 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Row 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Row 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (34 sts)

Row 4: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 7 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 7 sts* repeat * to * around, dc in next st, join in top of first dc (38 sts)

Cut yarn and change to light pink yarn.

Rows 5-8: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (38 sts)

Row 9: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, fpdc in next st, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (38 sts)

6-8 lb Preemie Hat

Starting with red yarn.

ch 3

Row 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Row 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Row 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (34 sts)

Row 4: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 4 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts* repeat * to * 4 more times around, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, join in top of first dc (41 sts)

Cut yarn and change to light pink yarn.

Rows 5-9: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (41 sts)

Row 10: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (41 sts)

9-11 lb Newborn Hat

Starting with red yarn.

ch 3

Row 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Row 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Row 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (34 sts)

Row 4: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (45 sts)

Cut yarn and change to light pink yarn.

Rows 5-11: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (45 sts)

Row 12: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (45 sts)

Eyes

With off white yarn.

ch 4

Row 1: 14 sc in 4th ch from hook, join

Row 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends

  • with off white yarn and a yarn needle
  • attach eyes to be in half of the red area, and half in the pink area on the front of the hat
  • cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends
  • with red yarn and a yarn needle
  • attach the wooden heart buttons in the middle of the eyes

Beak

with orange yarn.

ch 4

sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next st, dc in next st, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends

  • with orange yarn and a yarn needle
  • attach the beak right below the eyes

Ears

  • take 1 strand of each color used except for orange
  • take the 3 strands of yarn around a double crochet stitch on top of the hat
  • take both ends together and knot the yarn close to the hat
  • cut the ears down to the length you would like them to be
  • I cut mine 1″ above the knot
