Preemie Newborn Sleepy Owl Hat Crochet Pattern

Sizes Included

1-3 lb: 8.5-9″ circumference, 3.5-4″ length

3-5 lb: 11-11.5″ circumference, 4-5″ length

6-8 lb: 12-12.5″ circumference, 5-6″ length

9-11 lb (Newborn): 13-14″ circumference, 6-6.5″ length

Materials

Extra soft worsted weight yarn

  • We recommend Lion Brand, Vanna's Choice.
  1. Off white
  2. Light brown
  3. Dark brown
  4. Yellow
  • 1-3 lb: ~ 17 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 3-5 lb: ~34 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 6-8 lb: ~43 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 9-11 lb (Newborn): ~51 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons

G-6 (4.00mm) crochet hook

Fabric scissors

Yarn needle, to weave ends

Gauge

3 dc stitches x 2 rows is 1″

*Change the hook size to obtain the gauge

1-3 lb Preemie Hat

Starting with off white yarn.

ch 3

Row 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Row 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Row 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* repeat * to * around dc in next st, join in top of first dc (30 sts)

Rows 4-5: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (30 sts)

Cut yarn and change to light brown yarn.

Rows 6: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (30 sts)

Row 7: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, fpdc in next st, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (30 sts)

Cut yarn and change to light brown yarn.

Row 9: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (41 sts)

Row 10: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (41 sts)

9-11 lb Newborn Hat

Starting with off white yarn.

ch 3

Row 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Row 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Row 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (34 sts)

Row 4: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (45 sts)

Rows 5-10: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (45 sts)

Cut yarn and change to light brown yarn.

Row 11: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (45 sts)

Row 12: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (45 sts)

1-5 lb Hats Eyes (make 2)

With light brown yarn.

ch 3

Row 1: 14 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (15 sts)

  1. with dark brown yarn and a yarn needle
  2. stitch halfway down the dc eye, halfway along the bottom side of the eye
  3. then stitch outward 3 to 6 times along the line you just stitched
  4. tie yarn ends together
  5. attach the eyes to the front middle of the hat with light brown yarn and a yarn needle
6-11 lb Hats Eyes (make 2)

With light brown yarn.

ch 3

Row 1: 14 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join (15 sts)

Row 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (29 sts)

  1. with dark brown yarn and a yarn needle
  2. stitch in the single crochet, halfway along the bottom side of the eye
  3. then stitch outward 5 to 6 times along the line you just stitched
  4. tie yarn ends together
  5. attach the eyes to the front middle of the hat with light brown yarn and a yarn needle
Beak

with yellow yarn.

ch 4

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc, dc. Cut yarn, Fasten off, weave ends.

  • with yellow yarn and a yarn needle
  • attach the beak right below the eyes
Ears
  1. Take 2 strand of off white yarn and 1 strand of light brown yarn.
  2. Take the 3 strands of yarn around a double crochet stitch on top of the hat.
  3. Take both ends together and knot the yarn close to the hat.
  4. Cut the ears down to the length you would like them to be. I cut 1″ above the knot.

    I started one of these while sitting in the NICU with my new grandbabies. Made one in one day, and one the next. Easy and adorable. I used all scrap yarn and the nurses think they are adorable. Can’t wait to see my granddaughters go home in these hats!!

    I have been collecting preemie hat patterns to make to donate to hospitals. Thank you for sharing this pattern. I think it is the only animal or owl preemie pattern I have found. It is adorable and I’m sure it will bring smiles to the parents of these tiny ones
