Another pattern in The 12 Months Of Slouchy Hats!
“This super fast beanie is done in autumn jewel tones. Loops&Threads bulky yarn gives the impression of a patchwork quilt. This beanie makes a great fast project for beginners wanting to switch up their Tunisian skills.” ~Nicole of Tunisian Crochet Chick
Patchwork Beanie
Supplies:
1 skein Charisma BIG! (I chose Mulberry Bush)
8.0mm tunisian hook
5.5mm standard hook
Darning needle
Pattern notes:
-
This is a big skein of yarn. You will have LOTS left over. I’m making a scarf with my leftovers.
-
This is a great pattern for stashbusting, if you have a lot of little bits of bulky yarn to use up. It will add to the patchwork effect.
-
This pattern incorporates a bit of Tunisian entrelac, in that you join as you go.
-
Beanie starts at the crown, which is worked as a six wedge circle. The circle is bound off and sewn closed. The sides of the hat are picked up and worked as individual panels on the edges of each segment. The first panel is worked on it’s own and subsequent panels are joined to the last one worked. The last panel is joined to its neighbour, and the other side edge is sewn to the first panel. Finally, a band is crocheted in rounds of single crochet, using the smaller hook.
Eyelet Lace Pattern:
(standard return pass for all rows)
Foundation row: work a standard row of Tunisian simple stitch
Row 1: (the first loop on the hook is ignored. It is the working look and counts as the selvedge) *Tss2tog, yo* repeat across to last stitch, Tss in last stitch.
Row 2: *Tss in first stitch, Tfs in eyelet hole* repeat across to last stitch, Tss in last stitch.
Repeat these two rows for the pattern.
Tss: Tunisian simple stitch
Tss2tog: Tunisian simple stitch two together
Yo: yarn over hook
Tfs: Tunisian full stitch
Pattern:
Crown:
Following the instructions for the short row circle that I shared here, use the 8.0mm hook to create a 10 stitch short row circle with six wedges. Sew the circle closed and weave in ends.
Side panels:
First panel: Using the same hook, pick up 10 stitches along the edge of one wedge. Work in Eyelet Lace pattern for 9 rows. Tenth row: Bind off. Cut yarn, weave in ends.
Next panels: If you are left handed, begin your next panels to the left of your first panel. If you are right handed, begin your work to the right of your first panels. You should be crocheting towards the last panel that you did.
Follow the previous instructions for the first panel and work a 10 stitch block of Eyelet lace. When you get to the end of the forward pass, pick up a loop in the side edge of the previous panel. Work return pass as follows: *yo, pull through 2 loops* all the way across. This joins your work without creating an increase.
Last panel: work as established. Using your preferred method, sew the back seam closed. I slip stitched mine shut with the 5.5mm hook. Weave in ends.
Band:
Using the 5.5mm hook, work sc evenly around edge of hat.
Next rounds: work as many rounds of sc blo as you like. I worked four rounds. Cut yarn, weave in ends.
Enjoy your hat!!
