Common Questions about Afghans
What is an Afghan? Is an Afghan the Same as a Blanket?
If you are a crochet rookie and you encounter the term “afghan” in crochet books or websites, you might think that it is some kind of crochet stitch, technique, or whatnot. It sounds kind of intimidating, but it’s really not.
Still feeling like you might need some extra support. Check out my Crochet Essential Skills Course where I share 72 skills that every crocheter (and knitter) needs to master any crochet technique. Watch all the step by step video classes free for 2 days here.
So, what is an Afghan? The word “Afghan” most simply refers to the people from and things related to Afghanistan. However, the use of this term in the English language with a textile meaning began in the 1800s. An afghan for our purposes is a crocheted or knitted blanket or shawl. It is sometimes called “throw” for intermediate-size afghan blankets.
Now that you know what afghan means, you might ask yourself “Is an afghan the same as a Blanket?” Well, in layman’s terms, a blanket is relatively the same as an afghan in its function. Both serve the purpose of giving warmth. However, there is a difference between a blanket and an afghan in the crochet or knitting world.
A blanket is mostly made from a single piece of fabric widely used as bedding, while an afghan is a handcrafted blanket (crocheted or knitted) using different kinds of yarn. So, you might call the warmer on your bed a blanket and the one on the back of your couch an afghan, but sometimes the terms are used interchangeably as well.
Is it Easier to Knit or Crochet an Afghan Blanket?
Generally speaking, crocheting a blanket is much faster than knitting it. However, either crocheted or knitted blankets can be easy to make, depending on the pattern used and the size you would like to make. All you need is your hook, yarn, time, and patience to achieve your goal to finish your perfect afghan.
What is a Good Size for an Afghan Blanket?
There is no such thing as a standard size for a crochet blanket. The size depends on the use of the afghan. I’ll be listing here sizes for afghan crochet blankets. But remember, all sizes below are just approximate and it's really up to you what size you want to make your crochet afghan.
Just to make it easier for you I categorize these measurements into three: Baby blanket, lapghan (throw or couch afghan blanket), and bed-size blankets.
First, baby blankets. The average size for a baby blanket is 42” by 52”. However, there are more sizes that we can make depending on their purpose.
- Lovey – 12” by 12”
- Cradle – 15” by 30”
- Stroller and crib – 30” by 35”
- Receiving – 40” by 40”
Next is the “lapghan,” commonly known as a throw blanket or a couch blanket. A lapghan is basically a miniature version of the regular afghan blanket size. The average lapghan size is a minimum of 32” to 60”.
And lastly, we don’t want to forget the equally common bed-size afghan blankets.
- Twin – 66” by 90”
- Twin XL – 66” by 95”
- Full – 80” by 90”
- Queen – 90” by 100”
- King – 108” by 100”
- California King – 104” by 108”
Although the sizes listed above are just a guide for you, there are things that we also need to consider in making a crochet afghan blanket. You might also want to consider the height of the people who will snuggle under your blanket, how big your couch or bed is where you will use it, your personal style, and the designs you like in order to make the perfect crochet blanket for you.
How Much Time Does It Take to Crochet an Afghan?
Crocheting an afghan blanket generally takes a relatively long time. It requires patience, especially when you’re working with an intricate design using a lightweight yarn.
According to a survey of crocheters conducted by Little World of Whimsy, an average size crochet afghan blanket usually takes 20 hours of crocheting. But the time it takes to actually put in those 20 hours could take a month, or it could take a year, depending on how much time the crocheter has to devote to stitching each day. And amazingly, other people can crochet a blanket in 15 hours or less. Pretty impressive, right?
Well, there is really no definite time to finish a crochet blanket. There are factors to consider to know how much time it will take to crochet an afghan. The most important thing to consider is the design and the size of the finished blanket.
Then, you need to identify the thickness of the yarn and the right hook to use. This will greatly affect how fast or slow you can go with your project. And lastly, how much time can you spend crocheting each day.
If you consider gifting someone with an afghan blanket, you need to make sure to consider all of those things so you won't run out of your time before the occasion.
Should I Crochet a Gauge Swatch Before Starting an Afghan?
Well, this same question I keep asking myself every time I start a new project and most of the time, I don't gauge swatch. And you know where it leads? Frogging. (That means ripping your work out!) Very frustrating, I say. So, if you’re asking me? Always start with a swatch. It will save you time and emotion, trust me.
Start with your swatch, and make an approximate 4” by 4” square, which is the standard size of a gauge swatch. But to make it more accurate, instead of doing the standard gauge measurement, it would be best to make a larger size such as 6” by 6”, and then measure the 4” in the middle of your swatch.
This will be a great help with any of your projects, especially with an afghan blanket which takes more time and effort than a lot of other projects. You don’t want your project to come out much smaller or larger than expected, right? So, a swatch will help you start out on the right track.
Label and keep your swatches for reference for future crochet projects.
Can an Afghan be Knitted?
Yes, of course, an afghan can be knitted. If you are into knitting, I'm sure you would love our Knit Sampler Blanket Workshop, which teaches you several knit and purl stitch patterns you can combine in blocks to make a blanket of any size you like.
Do I Need an Afghan Hook to Crochet an Afghan Blanket?
An afghan hook is a special long crochet hook that is used for Tunisian crochet. Unless you are making a Tunisian afghan you do not need an afghan hook; just a regular crochet hook will do.
Best Crochet Stitches for Afghans and Blankets
Before we proceed to the free crochet patterns for afghans, let’s have a quick run-through of the most used and best crochet stitches for making afghans and blankets.
To get more in-depth information about crochet stitches, check out our Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library.
Double Crochet Stitch
Double crochet or dc is one of the quickest and easiest crochet stitches. It is tall so you can make progress quickly, and it has a little bit of airiness to it but makes a nice, warm afghan project.
Half Double Crochet Stitch
For some reason, half double crochet (hdc) doesn’t seem to be as popular as double crochet, but it’s still a pretty simple stitch that comes between single crochet and double crochet in height. Because it’s not as tall it makes for a more solid fabric that is nice and cozy.
Crochet Moss Stitch
Moss stitch is a classic stitch pattern that’s great for adding some easy texture to a project. Also known as linen stitch (among other names) crochet moss stitch is made with single crochets and chain stitches, so it’s simple enough for new stitchers but doesn’t look basic.
Granny Stitch
Granny stitch gives your projects the look a lot of people think of when they think of crocheted blankets and afghans. It’s a stitch that’s made with double crochet clusters with chains between them, so it works up quickly and has space between the stitches. This is a great option if you tend to find more solid blankets too warm.
Blanket Stitch
Of course, a stitch called blanket stitch is going to be ideal to crochet blankets, right? Blanket stitch is a combination of single and double crochet stitches that’s easy enough for beginners to stitch but has more texture than some of the more basic crochet stitches.
Suzette Stitch
Suzette stitch is another combination of single and double crochet stitches that looks similar to blanket stitch and makes for a warm and snuggly afghan. It’s interesting to see all the different combinations crocheters have come up with that are little variations on the same basic stitches.
Block Stitch
Block stitch is a fun and easy way to add colorwork to your projects because it allows you to stitch blocks of different colors with ease. You can use just two alternating colors or make a stash-busting afghan that uses all the leftovers from your other projects. The sky’s the limit!
Waffle Stitch
Waffle stitch is a crochet stitch that just looks warm and cozy. It actually looks like the segments in waffles and is a lot of fun to stitch. This stitch uses a lot of yarn so it makes a very cozy blanket for the coldest days.
Arruga Stitch
If you’re comfortable working front post and back post stitches or you are ready to learn, Arruga stitch might be the one for you. It alternates front post and back post double crochet for lots of texture and interest without increasing the skill level much.
If you want to learn more about any of these stitches or many more that you can use in crochet patterns for afghans or any other projects, check out our Ultimate Crochet Stitch Library today!
Supplies Needed to Crochet an Afghan
Choosing the Perfect Yarn to Make a Crochet Afghan
Choosing the perfect yarn for your afghan can be quite overwhelming, especially when you see a lot of choices in the store or even online. There are several points that we need to consider when buying yarn for blankets, including fiber type, yarn texture, price, and weight. I’ve selected a few great yarn options for you in different yarn weights.
When making a crochet afghan, yarn weight is a very big factor in how long it will take you to complete the afghan blanket. Light/DK (double knit, Craft Yarn Council designation 3) yarn is a good yarn to start with. However, because of the thinness of the yarn, it takes a longer time and more patience to complete a blanket.
The best yarn weight for me and the one I recommend for crochet afghans is the medium worsted yarn (CYC 4). You may also use bulky (5) or super bulky (6) yarn.
Here are 5 of our favorite Light/DK weight yarns:
- Lion Brand Mandala Baby
- Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend
- Lion Brand Baby Soft
- Bernat Softee Baby Yarn
- Patons Beehive Baby Sport Yarn
Here are 5 great Medium weight yarns:
- Lion Brand Vanna's Choice® Yarn
- Lion Brand Wool Ease
- Lion Brand Feels Like Butta
- Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti Pilling Yarn
- Red Heart Comfort
These 5 Bulky weight yarns are a good choice for your project:
- Bernat Maker Home Dec Yarn
- Red Heart Super Saver Chunky
- Lion Brand Hue + Me
- Red Heart Soft Essentials
- Plymouth Yarn Encore Chunky
Try one of these Super Bulky yarns to watch your crochet afghan fly off your hook:
- Bernat Blanket Yarn
- Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick
- Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn
- Lion Brand Mandala Quick and Thick Yarn
- Caron Cotton Cakes
How Many Skeins of Yarn Do You Need to Crochet an Afghan?
Exactly how much yarn you need to crochet a blanket will depend on the size of the blanket, the weight of the yarn, the size of the hook, the design of your afghan, and how much yarn is in each ball or skein you choose.
Crochet blankets can range from needing 2 to 17 skeins of yarn. If you need a little more guidance, Lion Brand Yarn estimates that you will need as little as 1,625 yards of super bulky yarn to complete an afghan or up to 4,125 yards of fine-weight yarn.
If you are using a pattern like one of the crochet patterns for afghans below, it should tell you the yardage and/or the number of skeins of a particular yarn used in the project at the size and gauge shown.
Crochet Hook for Making an Afghan Blanket
When it comes to crocheting an afghan blanket, most of the time we use a light worsted yarn to super bulky yarn. And with this yarn weight, the best crochet hook to use is between 4mm to 8mm.
The size of the crochet hook used to crochet an afghan typically corresponds to the weight of the yarn used – the heavier the yarn, the bigger the hook. Crochet patterns for afghans will tell you what yarn weight and hook size were used. If you are designing your own blanket, it’s a good idea to start with the hook size recommended on the ball band.
And if you do a gauge swatch as we talked about earlier, it’s important to know how your hook size affects your gauge. If you are getting fewer stitches per inch than the pattern calls for you need a smaller hook. If you are getting more stitches per inch, try a larger hook.
Afghan Blanket Notions and Tools Needed
Yarn – A good quality of yarn makes a big difference to your project. As mentioned above, a smooth worsted-weight yarn is a good place to start. If you’re new to crocheting, light or bright colors make it easier to see stitches.
Crochet hook – Take the time to find a crochet hook you like, that feels good in your hand because you’re going to be working with it for a long time to crochet a blanket. Try this kit here
Darning needle – A large-eyed, metal, or plastic needle comes in handy to weave the ends of your yarn when you finish your project.
Stitch markers – There are a wide variety of stitch markers on the market. They are handy for marking the beginning of a round if you’re working in the round, or for counting rows if you are working on panels of a blanket that need to match. You’ll want locking stitch markers that can be closed around the yarn as you work.
Scissors – A good sharp pair of scissors is essential for cutting your yarn.
