Sizes Included

1-3 lb: 8.5-9″ circumference, 3.5-4″ length

3-5 lb: 11-11.5″ circumference, 4-5″ length

6-8 lb: 12-12.5″ circumference, 5-6″ length

9-11 lb (Newborn): 13-14″ circumference, 6-6.5″ length

*These are our finished sizes. If yours doesn't fit within these measurements, please check your gauge.

Materials

Extra soft worsted weight yarn

  • We recommend Lion Brand, Vanna's Choice.
  1. Red
  2. Black
  3. White
  • 1-3 lb: ~ 17 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 3-5 lb: ~34 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 6-8 lb: ~43 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 9-11 lb (Newborn): ~51 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons

G-6 (4.00mm) crochet hook

2 small black buttons

Fabric scissors

Yarn needle, to weave ends

Stuffing/Poly-fil (optional)

Thread (optional)

Small needle (optional)

3 dc stitches x 2 rows is 1″

Starting with CA yarn,

ch 3

Round 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join (11 sts)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join (22 sts)

Round 3: ch 2, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* repeat * to * around dc in next st, join (29 sts)

Rounds 4-6: ch 2, dc in each st around, join (29 sts)

Round 7: ch 2, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, fpdc in next st, join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (29 sts)

3-5 lb Preemie Hat

Starting with CA yarn,

Starting with CA yarn,

ch 3

Round 3: ch 2, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat * to * around, join (33 sts)

Eyes (make 2)

With white yarn.

ch 2

Row 1: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join

Row 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st, join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends

  • Attach eyes to front of the hat with white yarn, and a yarn needle.
  • With 2 small black buttons, black yarn (or thread) and a yarn needle (or small needle).
  • Attach the black buttons to the white eyes.
Smile

Surface crochet a smile with black yarn.

1-5 lb Hat's Antennas

With black yarn.

ch 2

Row 1: 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join

Row 2-4: ch 1, sc in each st around, join

Row 5: ch 1, sc in each st around, join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends

(optional) Stuff the antennas with poly-fil (stuffing)

6-11 lb Hat's Antennas

With black yarn.

ch 2

Row 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join

Row 2-6: ch 1, sc in each st around, join

Row 7: ch 1, sc in each st around, join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends

(optional) Stuff the antennas with poly-fil (stuffing)

Heart

With red yarn.

ch 4

Round 1: (all worked in the 4th ch from hook) 3 trc, 4 dc, trc, 4 dc, 3 trc, ch 3, join in the middle circle, cut yarn,  fasten off, weave ends

Attaching Hearts and Antennas
  • Put the hearts together
  • Begin to weave the hearts together with red yarn and a yarn needle at the top of the hearts.
  • Put the antenna in between the hearts,
  • Continue sewing the hearts together (make sure to sew through the antenna as well so it doesn't come off.)
  • Repeat the same process with the other antenna.
  • Attach the antennas to the top of the hat with black yarn and a yarn needle.
